The Only Carry-On Packing List You'll Ever Need (40 Items, One Bag)
One carry-on, two weeks away, zero checked-bag fees. It's completely doable — the trick is packing by category with strict limits, not by wishful thinking. This is the exact list our team uses.
Clothes (the 5-4-3-2-1 rule)
5 tops, 4 bottoms, 3 pairs of socks and underwear per week (wash mid-trip), 2 layers (one warm, one rain), 1 pair of versatile shoes plus the ones you wear. Choose a single colour palette so everything matches everything.
Toiletries — decant everything
100 ml rule still applies: one clear 1-litre bag with decanted essentials — shampoo bar (no liquid limit!), toothpaste, deodorant, SPF 50, moisturiser. Solid toiletries are the carry-on traveller's best friend.
Tech kit
Phone, universal adapter, 10,000 mAh power bank (carry-on only — never checked), charging cables, earbuds, and an offline-downloaded map of your destination. Optional: e-reader instead of books.
Documents and money
Passport (6+ months validity), digital and paper copies stored separately, boarding passes, travel insurance details, one credit card plus one backup card, and a small amount of local currency.
Health and comfort
Any prescription medication in original packaging, painkillers, plasters, hand sanitiser, eye mask, earplugs, and a refillable water bottle (fill after security).
The 'just in case' five
Travel laundry sheet, 3-metre cord (washing line), safety pins, zip bags, and a foldable tote for overflow shopping. Combined weight: under 100 grams. Combined usefulness: enormous.
What to leave behind
'Just in case' shoes, full-size anything, more than one pair of jeans, hair tools (hotels have them), and guidebooks (your phone does it better).
The Bottom Line
Forty items, one bag, no checked luggage, no carousel, no lost-suitcase horror story. Pack once by this list and you'll never go back to the big suitcase.
